Welcome to the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair Professional Programme!

There is an exciting programme featuring specialised events for librarians, teachers and educators including an accredited course for librarians, storytelling, writing, illustrating and song-writing workshops, discussions on encouraging the next generation of readers and for teachers of Arabic, a presentation on the Arabic dictionary and new ways of teaching the Arabic language.

These hands-on workshops will also be live-streamed and free to attend, but are only available at specific times to those who have booked a place. Early booking is essential as places are limited due to the interactive nature of the session. You will be sent a link to join the session you have registered for.

Accredited Course for Librarians (Secondary)

Sunday, 23 May – Monday, 24 May, 11:00-14:00
Language: In English with simultaneous translation into Arabic

International speaker, specialist adviser and trainer in all aspects of school libraries, a Chartered Librarian and Fellow of CILIP, Vice-Chair of the #GreatSchoolLibraries campaign, Elizabeth Hutchinson will guide the participants through a two-day course with information, access to resources and an insight into how to make libraries more fulfilling and engaging. Get the Picture with Korky Paul: A Masterclass in Illustration

Monday 24th May 14:30-15:30
Language: In English

Join one of the world’s most recognised illustrators with many years of experience in this workshop as he explains the process of illustrating a double-page spread using one of his picture books. Starting from deciding on the text, Korky Paul will take us through the pencil roughs, right through to producing the finished art, including the layout and design. He will also talk about materials, equipment and the use of Quark/InDesign and Photoshop in preparing the work for printing. There will also be a chance to look through Korky’s extensive portfolio with archives containing the roughs and finished art from the picture book the talk is based on.

Little Creative Days: Course for Librarians (Primary)

In this session for teachers and librarians of primary schools, Tonya Meers and Natasha Charleene of Little Creative Days will share their ideas on fun educational creative storytelling techniques which will help children retain the knowledge they have been taught. Participants will leave with a stock of ideas and inspiration for their students to enjoy.

Writing Masterclass in Arabic with Muhsin Al-Ramli

Muhsin Al-Ramli is an expatriate Iraqi writer living in Madrid, Spain since 1995. He is a translator of several Spanish classics to Arabic. He produced the complete translation of Don Quixote from Spanish to Arabic. He teaches at the Saint Louis University Madrid Campus. In this masterclass, he will support those wanting to write in Arabic and share some of the wisdom discovered during his own writing journey. With the support and excellent advice, you will come away from this session inspired.

A New Look at Arabic Dictionaries & the Teaching of Arabic through Literature

Dr Laila Familiar is an expert in the field of Arabic language education, curricular design, and teacher training and mentoring. Her presentation on the Arabic dictionary and language for Arabic teachers features the most commonly used 2,000 words in contemporary Arabic fiction. The session is aimed at teachers of Arabic interested in using engaging teaching materials, and to authors who would like to write literary Graded Readers that can effectively develop students’ reading skills in Arabic. It will be live-streamed with Q & A. An accomplished teacher of Arabic and an instructional coach, Laila has 20 years of experience teaching and overseeing various language programs in the Middle East and the U.S.

Singer Arqam holds a special place within the music world here in the UAE. His soulful compositions transition both cultural and generational boundaries. In this masterclass, he will help those attending with pieces they are working on, inspire new ideas for those yet to begin and talk about his relationship with words and music. His songwriting workshop will show how to put words to music; breaking down the components of creation, through development to a finished piece. This is a rare chance to share time with an up-and-coming talent.
