Paid Student Sessions

The Emirates Literature Foundation is a non-profit making organisation which aims to foster a life-long love of all forms of reading. To enable us to reach as many young readers as possible, some of our events are paid; these paid events help support our broad Education Programme. During the Festival, the Paid Student Sessions are those events that we feel have strong educational value and often link directly to the curriculum.

In 2019, you can look forward to Author Sessions for Primary and Secondary students. These Paid Student Sessions will take place at the InterContinental Event Centre, Dubai Festival City as part of the EAFOL Education Programme on Tuesday 5, Wednesday 6 and Thursday 7 March.

Tickets cost AED45 per student, and need to be purchased in advance. Accompanying teachers will receive free tickets.

Peter Frankopan is Professor of Global History at Oxford University, with the focus of his work being on the history of the Mediterranean, Russia, the Middle East, Central Asia and beyond. His book Silk Roads: A New History of the World met with great critical acclaim, and The New Silk Roads: The Present and Future of the World now brings the story up to date.

During this interactive event, Peter will work with the audience to explore why history matters (if indeed it does!) and how we can change the way we look at the past. Does history repeat itself? Gillian Cross: The Power of the Demon Headmaster

Gillian Cross finds her motivation to write from her love of telling stories and her desire to find things out. This award-winning author is probably best known for her series of books featuring The Demon Headmaster, which has been enthralling children since 1982.

The Demon Headmaster continues to dream up evil schemes – how does Gillian continue to think up the characters and plots? Although she doesn’t have the hypnotic eyes of her most famous creation, Gillian will still lead the audience to bring their own characters to life and discover just what ingredients make a great plot, and teachers can take these ideas back to the classroom!

The writer’s job is to make that world believable, and Jasper Fforde is a master at it! This is a world of soothsayers and dragonslayers, and fifteen-year-old Jennifer Strange is heavily involved; her employment agency Kazam is struggling in the uncertain economic climate of the Kingdom of Snodd… But who is the Dragonslayer, and do they have what it takes to kill the last dragon?

What our teachers are saying

“Students returned excited and motivated from both the sessions: “I learnt never to give up” and “Don’t ever quit, follow your dreams.”

Fatema Kashief, English Coordinator – Year 3 to 8, Pristine Private School

“It was very helpful and very inspiring. Ali Sparkes was able to bring out the beast of an author in them!”

Mirard A Magsipoc, English Coordinator, The Philippine Global School

“Poetry Live was a fantastic experience. The poets were really engaging and the pupils enjoyed the questions. The examiner sections were very informative and just the right length to pass on valuable advice without losing the interest of the pupils.”
