Roots & Shoots
Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots programme is about making positive change happen – for communities, for animals and for the environment, by providing teachers with exciting and inspiring activities that their students can get involved in.
The resources offer opportunities to learn about humanitarian, animal and environmental issues affecting our world, share insights, ideas and inspiration for making positive change happen.
Following the twinning of Roots & Shoots UAE and Voices of Future Generations for the Middle East, the Emirates Literature Foundation in partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute, will lead the outreach for both initiatives in tandem.
HH Sheikha Maytha bint Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum has been named Goodwill Ambassador for Roots & Shoots UAE, and HH Sheikha Hissa bint Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum is the Goodwill Ambassador for Voices of Future Generations Middle East. Together the sisters aim to ensure children today grow up with a mastery of reading and writing coupled with the awareness and drive to protect the environment and vulnerable communities, in order to create a more sustainable world.
The Foundation will drive the growth of the initiatives across the seven emirates of the UAE and the wider region, with an aim to create learning opportunities, field trips, and science projects.
Together the two initiatives provide a comprehensive sustainability-themed path with a focus on the SDGs for children to follow from a young age up to adulthood.
How It Works
The Voices of Future Generations initiative is a creative writing competition that encourages children aged 8-12 to write adventure stories featuring sustainable themes, about characters overcoming challenges and creating a more tolerant, sustainable world. It was created to promote sustainability awareness and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The Jane Goodall Institute’s Roots & Shoots program aims to empower young people to get together to implement practical positive change for people, animals and the environment. Showing and celebrating success is a key part of the Roots & Shoots initiative, to energise and inspire, and proving time and again that anyone can make a difference.
The Emirates Literature Foundation will drive the growth of the two initiatives side by side across the seven emirates of the UAE and the wider region, with an aim to create immersive, creative learning opportunities, field trips, and science projects.
Twinning the two initiatives will give a comprehensive sustainability-themed path for children to follow from a young age up to adulthood. Knowledge and understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals through creating their own stories gives young people a voice on a global platform, and a way to encourage others to take up the challenge.
Further announcements about exciting ways for children to get involved will follow in the coming months.
